Alameda High School Students to Perform Tony Award Winning Musical

The Alameda High School (AHS) Drama Club will be performing renditions of the Tony Award winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Fred Chacon Little Theater this month.

The musical tells the story of “an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents [vying] for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake,” according to Music Theater International.

AHS’ Spelling Bee performances will be directed by AHS theater director Anneka Fagundes, the musical direction by Camden Daly, and choreographed by AHS dance educator Rachel McCray Denton. The musical was based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, a play by Rebecca Feldman. The play was workshopped into a musical with song and lyrics created by William Finn.

AHS performances will be held on March 16, 17, 18, 24, 25, and 26. The show on Sunday, March 26 will begin at 2 p.m. All other shows will begin at 7 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit https://gofan.co/app/school/CA22847?activity=Performing%20Arts.
