Alameda High Alum Finishes Third for Football Award
Alameda High alum Keelan Doss finished third for the Walter Payton Award given to the offensive player of the year in the college Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
Doss, a wide receiver for the University of California Davis Aggies, finished behind quarterbacks Jeremiah Briscoe of Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Tex., and Chris Streveler of University of South Dakota. The award was handed out at the STATS FCS Banquet and Presentation on Jan. 5 in Frisco, Tex.
Doss received 10 first-place votes and 11 second-place votes for the award. He was the only receiver to finish among the top 10 vote-getters.
Doss was part of a 5-6 Aggies team in 2017. He finished the season with 1,499 receiving yards, 115 receptions and nine 100-yard games, all school records. He also scored seven touchdowns. He led all FCS receivers nationwide with 10.5 receptions per game. Doss had his best game of the season against Eastern Washington University on Oct. 7. He caught 15 receptions for 208 yards and a touchdown. Doss was named to the Associated Press FCS All-American first team.
Doss graduated from Alameda High in 2014. He is majoring in organizational studies. Doss has one year of eligibility remaining.
The Walter Payton Award has been given annually for the last 31 years. Payton is a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, who won Super Bowl XX with the Chicago Bears. He attended Jackson State University.
