Alameda Artist Paints ‘Love Letter to Oakland’

Eric J. Kos

Alameda muralist David Burke just completed his lastest work in Oakland’s Jack London Square titled “Love Letter to Oakland.” The new painting is located at the intersection of Oak and 4th streets by I-880. The mural depicts from left to right, Tureeda Mikell, James Gayles, Samuel Getachew and Vanessa “Agana” Espinoza. Burke lists several contributing artists’ names along with his own: Joevic Yeban, Keena Romano, Dorias Brannon, Zach Cotham, Chris Rummell, Dickson Schneider and Shawn Burson. The Bay Farm Island resident has completed several impressive works across the estuary, including the community mural left unfinished after the murder of street artist Antonio Ramos. The individuals shown in the mural are Oakland artists. Mikell dances, writes poetry and music; Gayles is known for blending watercolor painting and poetry; Getachew gained recognition as a poet at age 15 and Espinoza is a hip hop DJ and graffiti artist.
