2022 Sports Highlights of the Year Part 1
This year saw many sports achievements from Alameda athletes. Alameda athletes and teams in soccer, basketball, baseball and track-and-field showcased their talent in the first half of the year.
The Alameda team of the first half of the year was the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) baseball team. The Pilots advanced to the North Coast Section (NCS) Div. IV baseball championship game in 2022. They fell to St. Mary’s High of Albany in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel on May 28. The team finished with a 20-8 overall record. They were led all year by their starting pitcher Dylan Stewart, who has since gone on to play collegiately for Pepperdine University.
The Alameda High women’s basketball team was also stellar in 2022. They advanced to the NCS Div. II semifinal. They achieved a 13-8 overall record.
Alameda native Cooper Teare also had stellar exploits in the first half of 2022. He won the men’s 1,500-meter race at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 25 with a time of 3:45.86, finished second in the 3,000-meter race at the 114th annual Millrose Games on Jan. 29 with a time of 7:39.61 and was inducted into the SJND Athletic Hall-of-Fame.
