‘Scouting for Food’ Finds Tons of Generosity

The annual “food-raising” event sponsored by the Alameda Council — Boy Scouts of America to benefit the Alameda Food Bank (AFB) “Scouting for Food,” took place last weekend and saw an impressive outpouring of community giving. Scouts scoured the Island for donations left on residents’ front porches in the form of canned and non-perishable foods. The U.S. Coast Guard provided transportation support and assisted in sorting the food. Volunteers with the Rotary Club of Alameda (above) staffed tables to receive 4,554 food items that needed to be sorted into categories and boxed for delivery to AFB. Other contributors included the Elks, Red Cross Youth and First Presbyterian, Bay Farm Community and Alameda Christian Reformed churches and individuals. According to AFB, 18,493 pounds (9 tons) of food was processed and will go to assist members of the Alameda community in the coming months. In addition, the community donated some 10,000 volunteer hours to the effort.
