‘Dumb Friends’ Park Bench Gets Reprieve

‘Dumb Friends’ Park Bench Gets Reprieve

After its meeting last Thursday, the Alameda Recreation and Parks Commission agreed to make an effort to restore the Isabelle Clark-donated bench at the south end of Jackson Park. The commission heard from a group of residents dedicated to preserving the bench.

Jim Manning, a resident who created a petition that garnered nearly 500 signatures in support of the bench, will now lead an effort to raise the money needed for the concrete bench and its inscription’s restoration. Manning cited community support as a determining factor in the decision to preserve the bench known for its inscribed message reading “In Memory of My Dumb Friends” referring to Clark’s animal companions.

An estimated $15,000 will be needed to repair the bench of which $5,000 will be contributed by the parks department. To help with the rest, visit www.savethebench.org.
