The Alameda Rugby Islanders are ready to kick off its 2014 season on Feb. 8. The 2014 season will be the 11th year of the rugby club, which began in 2003.

In our second part of showcasing the 2013-14 winter sports’ season for Alameda high school athletes, we will take a trip to the soccer fields. This season the women’s teams are experiencing much better results than their male counterparts.

Alameda High School student Sulaiman Hameed accepted a college football scholarship to Washington State University (WSU) Monday, Jan. 6. The high school senior chose the Cougars over offers from Arizona State and UNLV.

The 40th Annual National Elks Hoops-Shoot contest will be held tomorrow Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Alameda Point Gymnasium.
