About this time each year, as I scan any gathering of gulls resting near the shore in Alameda, I suddenly stop. Why does that mid-sized gull look grey, rather than white or smudged brown? And why does it have a small red bill with a black tip?

The Canada Goose (Branta Canadensis) is a bird that many of us know well! Large-bodied with long, black necks and a white-and-black head, they have become common in many of our parks and grasslands. They are usually quite tolerant of humans.

Phil Hebda finished first overall out of more than 1,000 participants in the Alameda Fourth of July 5K Race for Midway Shelter last Monday. The Berkeley native finished the 5K (3.1 miles) with a chip time of 15:52.8.

Alameda native Michael Proffitt will have his Eagle Court of Honor ceremony on Wednesday, June 29, at the Alameda Elks Lodge 1015 after a two-year delay.
