Corporate America, in its beneficence, infinite wisdom and noble pursuit of perpetual profit, has finally created a holiday truly worth celebrating, a holiday that honors what really matters: acquisition. This holiday — currently known as Black Friday — will now be called “Thanksgetting.”

Part two of two

When I was a kid in grammar school, Nov. 11 was called Armistice Day. And at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, our teacher would have everyone stand and be quiet for a minute.

From time to time in the newspaper we read a lament about rents and housing prices being increased, driving citizens out of their homes. Nothing new about this, it is established real estate practice.

Alameda Point is at a significant cross-road, and so is the Alameda Point Collaborative (APC). APC was established in 1999 through a special federal homeless accommodation process.

What will $11,800 buy you? This amount may have influenced new contracts with the city of Alameda. In this last general election only one elected official collected contributions from a Public Safety Employee Union. That individual was Councilman Jim Oddie. 

Alameda City Planner Andrew Thomas’ letter to the editor (“City planner responds,” April 30) is disingenuous and borders on ludicrous.

Rising rents, housing prices and evictions throughout Alameda and the Bay area illustrate Paul Foreman’s point (“Rethink affordable housing in Alameda,” March 26) that “we have a long way to go to meet the affordable housing goal” the State set in Alameda’s 2015-2023 housing element.

“The comedy of #Alameda elected officials downplaying great economic news because it undercuts austerity plans is very evident [at the April 16 Special City Council Meeting on the budget,]" the East Bay Citizen’s Steve Tavares, tweeted that evening.
