My fellow Alamedans, we have once again crossed off that day on the calendar when the Alameda Sun celebrates its birthday. The Sun staff continue bringing you a compilation of interesting and Alameda items every week.
By way of background, from 2011-2016 I was the harbor master of the Alameda Marina. At that time the estuary was inundated with anchor-outs, 40-50, a real Waterworld. Our marina suffered considerable crime, primarily the theft of outboard motors from dry stored vessels.
Respect is defined as “esteem or deferential regard felt or shown.”
I am aware that some believe certain individuals or groups of people should be automatically treated with respect. I find myself questioning this belief.
Spring 2023 marked a new beginning for Fred — buying his first house and finally moving into it. Little did he know that, just a few months later, his house would be the subject of an elaborate rental scam that’s becoming more common these days.
As a former community prosecutor in Oakland, and as a retired sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department, we are deeply invested in community safety. That requires that we identify and foster solutions to the criminal justice system’s many fundamental issues and flaws.
Recently, I was in Hawaii visiting my daughter and her family. They gave us a suite with a bed, bath and kitchenette, plus space for a sofa, and a room for exercises and using small weights. That night I was still oscillating between Pacific and Hawaii time when I woke up around 3 a.m.
We took advantage of the beautiful weather last weekend and rode our bikes to Alameda Point for brunch at Firebrand Bakery Café. The Cross Alameda Trail from Jean Sweeney Park to Seaplane Lagoon Waterfront Promenade was bustling with cyclists of all ages.
Fentanyl remains a significant threat throughout the state. Illegally made fentanyl is available on the drug market in different forms. The powder version is commonly mixed with drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine and made into pills that resemble prescription pain medication.
The Oakland Estuary is in a state of crisis, the worst I’ve seen over the past decade. This is not an exaggeration.
