Readers of "Library Still Worth Funding," Jan. 30, and friends of Rhea Nelson may be interested in contributing to her memorial fund by sending checks to the Friends of the Library (P.O. Box 1024, Alameda, CA 94501).

The fund will be used to add children’s books to the collection.

This happened a couple of blocks away from my home in Oakland ("Alamedan Murdered in Oakland," Jan. 30). I heard the shots fired. I can tell you that this is very unusual for this neighborhood.

From seeing the crime scene first hand, reading the paper and talking to friends and neighbors it seems that Mr. Kent (the victim) may have been the intended target. That may be the reason why the "police have not determined" why Mr. Kent was in the Walgreens parking lot on High Street.

Those of us alarmed by this shocking crime in our neighborhood would like the police to be more forthcoming with details.

Was this a mugging or a drug deal gone bad?

Thank you for recognizing the efforts of the great young men and women who make up the Alameda Rugby Club ("Islanders Begin 11th Year of Rugby Club," Jan 30.)

The club is poised to have a fantastic 2014 season. We welcome all newcomers and it is not too late to join the 2014 team.

Feel free to drop by training at Tillman Park Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m.

Go Alameda!
