Open letter to Bonta
Dear Assemblyman Bonta:
There is a historic criminal justice reform movement sweeping the country. This movement surfaced locally when Alameda County learned incumbent District Attorney Nancy O’Malley, received a $10,000 campaign donation from the Fremont Officers Association. She followed this contribution with the exoneration of those officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old woman last year.
Given the body of legislative work you have put forward over the years, legislation aimed at helping people overcome the injustice of our criminal justice system, I’m disappointed and concerned by the mixed signals your campaign sends by accepting this $2,500 contribution from the Oakland Police Department.
If there is a window of opportunity to fire a warning shot across the bow of a criminal justice system badly in need of reform it would be now. Taking money at this historic juncture is troubling and I respectfully request you consider returning that contribution.
Thank you for your consideration.
