Not Mayberry any more

Editor:
During the 11 years I’ve lived in Alameda I have seen a disturbing trend in how our City Councilmembers are elected. It used to be that an independent, concerned local resident could be elected to City Council. Now we have political action committees composed of big money from unions and developers who support their special interest candidates, or smear an opposing incumbent.

After these people are seated on our council they then vote for the political interests of the backers who paid to put them in office, not for what is best for the city.

In the election next year we will have to pay very close attention to what interests are behind each candidate. We deserve to have city leaders whose first concern is the betterment of our city, not the advancement of their political careers or payback to their financial backers.
