Deadline for poem, poster contest extended
The Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) LGBTQ Round Table announced a new theme for the Everyone Belongs Here Poster and Poetry Contest this year: “Every Pronoun Belongs Here.” We recently decided to extend the deadline for contest submissions to Monday, May 20, to encourage more artists and poets to participate.
Through original art and writing entrants will show whether she, he, they, ze or hir pronouns are appropriate, everyone is a part of the community, a citizen and all citizens are accepted.
The contest is open to students in fourth through 12th grade. Contestants can write a poem, design a poster or both. Awards will be given to winners in fourth- to eighth-grade and ninth- to twelfth-grade categories. The overall winning poster will be displayed in AUSD schools and offices.
Submissions can be sent to me at Books Inc., 1344 Park St. For more information, write me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Editor’s note: Gene Kahane is one of Alameda’s poets laureate.
