The Alameda Mayor’s Fourth of July Parade has announced that the fourth annual Alameda R.A.C.E. (Ralph Appezzato Charity Event) will take place again this year following the parade. The 5k run or walk event honors the memory of Ralph Appezzato and raises funds for charities in the community.
A former mayor of Alameda, Appezzato was chairman of the Alameda Mayor’s Fourth of July Parade and actively supported the agencies that benefit from this event — the Alameda Education Foundation, Alameda Meals on Wheels, Alameda Red Cross, and the Alameda Midway Shelter for Abused and Homeless Women and Children.
Top high school runners and other beginners often participate in the R.A.C.E. as their first 5K run. For those who can’t run but would like to take part, a walk event will also take place.
Both the run and walk start in front of the Park Street branch of Bank of Alameda (1416 Park St.). Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the start at 9:45 a.m.
The runners and walkers then follow the parade route and finish 3.1 miles later in front of the reviewing stand at the corner of Webster and Haight streets.
For the runners, medals will be awarded to the top three men and top three women runners for the fastest times in age brackets 18 and younger, 19 to 40 inclusive, and 41 and older.
To enter, runners and walkers need to raise $50 or more as their entry fee and
submit it with their entry form or register online at www.AlamedaRACE.com.
For families, there is a special group rate of $100. Entrants can either sponsor themselves or seek sponsorship from local businesses and individuals. The first 150 participants to register will receive an official R.A.C.E. T-shirt.
For the convenience of entrants who would like to park their car at the finish line, a complimentary shuttle bus will be available from 8 to 9 a.m. near the finish line at Webster and Taylor streets to bring them back to the starting line on Park Street.
For additional information or to register online, visit www.AlamedaRACE.com or call the R.A.C.E. Hotline at 523-2647.
For those without online access, registration forms are also available at all three Bank of Alameda branches: 2130 Otis Drive in the Alameda Towne Centre, 1416 Park St., and 883-A Island Drive in the Harbor Bay Landing.
