Westside candidates' forum

Students from Alameda Community Learning Center, Nea Community Learning Center, Alternatives in Action High School and the Encinal Jetsetters after-school program are teaming up with the Alameda Multicultural Community Center and the Alameda Point Collaborative to sponsor the Westside Alameda Candidates' Forum.

The students will host the event, help develop the forum format and pose questions to the candidates running for the city council and board of education. Voter registration will also be offered at the event.

The forum will take place Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Alternatives in Action High School (formerly BASE), 1900 Third St.

Rally at Encinal High

The JetSetters Afterschool Program will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool rally next Thursday, Oct. 18, at Encinal High School, 201 Central Ave. The rally will be one of more than 7,500 such events around the nation that day, Parents and supporters will sign a petition that urges lawmakers not to deny or divert funding for afterschool programs.

JetSetters students will highlight skills they have learned as well as the significant contributions that afterschool programs make to Alameda. These include keeping kids safe and healthy, inspiring them to learn and relieving working parents of worries about their children's activities during the afternoon hours.
