Alameda Could Be Ideal Home for Google's Gigabit Deal

Internet giant Google has announced that it wants to pilot a program of ultra-high-speed broadband called "Fiber for Communities." The company is looking for cities interested in this Internet service. Wire Alameda has formed to help encourage Google to make the Island City its top choice for the program.

"Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans are used to," Google said in its request for information packet. The company says its fiber-to-home pilot program will deliver information at the speed of 1 gigabyte per second compared to the 4 megabytes per second most households are used to.

To get involved and, in Wire Alameda's words, "show Google what an excellent choice Alameda is for their fiber-to-the-home pilot," log onto http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/think-big-with-gig-our-experimental.html.

The clock is ticking; Google has given cities until March 26 to reply to its request for information.

The city government has announced that it intends to apply for the service.
