The East Bay Regional Park District released a plan on Tuesday for a major sand replenishment project at Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach. If approved, the project is scheduled to begin in September 2010. The proposed plan includes bringing in more than 82,000 cubic yards of sand in two phases and grading the beach to conform to the 1988 as-built footprint. The federal government is funding Phase 1 at a cost of $860,000. Phase 1 involves placing up to 20,600 cubic yards of sand to replace sand lost during a major storm in December 2005. More of Crown Beach Opens to Public East Bay Regional Park District has decided to replace the yellow tape and beach-closure signs with tar-ball informational signs and reopen Crown Beach from Westline Drive east to Grand Street. The district opened the western section of the beach from Westline Drive to Alameda Point earlier two weeks ago. The California Department of Boating and Waterways will fund Phase 2, which is projected to cost some $1.5 million. The second phase involves placing an additional 62,000 cubic yards of sand on Crown Beach. Additional funding for the second phase is available through the Park District's Measure WW bond, which voters approved in November 2008.
