In a non-league battle of two of the hottest teams in the Bay Area, it was the Pilots who stayed hot, beating Lick-Wilmerding of San Francisco, 10-4, on April 3. Going into the game, St. Joseph was riding a 7-game win streak, while the Tigers had an 8-game streak of their own. Someone had to blink, and now it is the Pilots who are on an 8-game roll, and proud owners of a 10-1 record. The Tigers fell to 10-3. The Tigers scored a run in the first inning off Pilot starter Jonathan Republicano on a single by their starting pitcher, Nico Yankowski, who scored on a double by first baseman Haden Cory. The Pilots countered with two runs in their half of the first inning. Billy Johnson led-off with a triple into the right-center field gap rolling all the way to the fence. After a walk and stolen base by Anthony Ratto, Chuy Alvarez singled home Johnson and moved Ratto to t St. Joseph scored five more runs in the second inning. The Pilots loaded the bases on a Tigers' infield error, a single by Justin Oilar outfield was dropped for a 2-base error. With a 7-1 lead, Republicano became comfortable on the mound, retiring the Tigers uneventfully in the second and third innings. However, after retiring the first batter in the fourth inning, he yielded back-to-back walks and was replaced by Dominic Ratto, who immediately induced a double-play grounder to set down the Tigers. Ratto ran into trouble of his own in the fifth inning, as Lick-Wilmerding mounted a comeback by scoring three runs. Singles by Matt Waters, Yankowski and Cory scored one run. A walk, a single by David Fleming and a sacrifice fly by Evan Weiner scored two more runs. Ratto found his resolve by getting a strikeout to end the inning, which happened to represent the tying run. The Tigers again threatened in the sixth inning with one out, getting two runners on base via a hit batter and a walk. Millado came on in relief of Ratto and ended the threat with a fly ball out and a soft pop-up back to the mound. Leading 7-4, SJND put the game away in their half of the sixth inning. They loaded the bases on a hit batter and back-to-back walks. A sacrifice fly RBI by Millado scored one run, and after a walk to Alvarez to reload the bases, Connacher hit a clutch single to score the final two runs. It was left to Millado to complete the save, starting a double play to end the game. Republicano, Ratto and Millado combined to strike out five, allow seven hits, and produce two double plays. The Pilots had just five hits, but made them count. The heart of the Pilots' batting order of Millado, Alvarez and Connacher drove in seven of the Pilots' 10 runs. Anthony Ratto accounted for an RBI, and the remaining two runs were unearned. |
