Artists Isaiah and Julia Zagar, Laurel True and Chuck DiGuida combined forces recently with 12 mosaic students, one assistant and several friends to continue the transformation of the old Pitchometer Propeller site at 2516 Blanding Ave. into La Casa de las Sirenas (House of the Mermaids), a performance space and gallery. The building is now decorated with a brightly colored mosaic of recycled tile, mirror and pigmented grout. Isaiah and Julia Zagar are in the Jingletown neighborhood of Oakland to teach and complete the work on the mural at the site. The class, "Visionary Mosaic Murals," was offered by Oakland's Institute of Mosaic Art, co-founded by True of True Mosaics. DiGuida is the owner of the performance space and gallery that now hosts the mosaic. DiGuida is a photographer who has been restoring the building since the '90s. The space currently hosts Virago Theater's production of The Hermit Bird. Visit www.instituteofmosaicart.com for more information on the artwork and artists. |
